My One and Only

by Kristan Higgins

When I first read the blurb, I thought 'Kristan Higgins' taking us on a road trip? Woo..hoo. Sign me on!'

And quite a trip that is. If you're expecting a light rom-com read, be prepared, because this one's just packed with emotional wallop.

I have always been a fan, reading every single one of her books, some more than thrice. I found the last two books quite a let down, I had doubt if she'd lost her mojo, or even worst if she ran out of material and kept repeating herself. After finishing this book, I'm relieved because she's back in full force.

'My One and Only' starts out with a nice change of pace from her usual scenes of various New England's small towns which I found charming, but lately repetitive.

Ms. Higgins is, in my opinion, one of the best in creating wacky, laugh-out-loud scenarios, and I'm happy to report that there are quite a few in this book. There are also several poignant moments that really squeeze my heart (She's very good at that too, it seems she's good at many things.)
She has such an adorable way of charaterizing things: people, babies and especially animal.

Now I'm done with the gushing, let's move on to the nitpicking. Half way through the book, I almost jumped and gave this book a perfect score, to hell with the rest. Then, the last fifty or so pages came, and I found them too much, too over the top. I know this is a rom com, but dialing down the wackiness a bit would be nice.

The hero is, again, too good to be true (like one of her titles, and her other heroes). What I find very disturbing, however, is his first come-on lines to our heroine. Of course, he's hot and perfect and all that goodness so he can get away with it (in books or even in real life). But, just imagine a random guy in a bar deliver those lines to you, and he looks like...I don't know..Jason Cruise perhaps..would you think it romantic? I don't think so. It's unfortunate really because that particular scene is supposed to lay the foundation to their eternal love at first sight, but it just feels....creepy to me.
