Until There Was You

by Kristan Higgins

Another retelling of an old favorite theme, of bad boy's returning home and once-looked-over, torch-carrying, ordinary looking heroine. I've been a fan of Kristan Higgins, and in this book we have all the Kristan Higgins' hallmark, a backdrop of small town in New England, a pathetic heroine, her quirky relatives and friends and, of course who can forget, a dog. But, there are a couple news in this book, a third-person POV and a hero's POV, no less. I don't know if this is a temporary/experimental thing, but it works for this book -- no, scrap that. It is actually necessary for this book. If we don't get Liam's POV, I guess I would have definitely hated him and ended up hate this book. Even with his POV, I still think he is quite a jerk. However, the worst part for me is not his mighty gorgeous irresistable highness, but our doormat heroine. Well, if you found other heroines of Ms. Higgins to be pathetic, here she is, with another record-breaking of doormatness. How many of you would let a guy break your heart, not once, not twice, but three times. I get the idea of honesty, not playing game thing, but where is a little self respect? Where is pride? A tiny trace would be appreciated, but no....Miss Cordelia-Posey had to put herself out there and got stomped over and over. From a female perspective, that is just so frustrating to read. I even wonder if we would have got an HEA if the daughter didn't give the green light. Anyway, Higgins' rare talent in making you laugh out loud one minute and balling your eyes off in another saves the book for me. The secondary characters are gorgeously drawn, and the craziness is toned down. Overall, this is not a memorable read, but competent nontheless.
